10 Mistakes To Avoid When Creating Online Questionnaires

There are 10 common mistakes made by people who create online questionnaires. If you want to ensure yours is successful in terms of number of responses and quality and quantity of responses, you must avoid these ten pitfalls.

Top 10 Mistakes to Make When You Create Online Questionnaires

Not understanding the target audience "" this means you ask the questions to the wrong people or draw conclusions without considering variables.

Create online questionnaires with restrictive multiple choice questions "" this means that your questions must include a "don"t know" and/or "non-applicable" option.

Requiring answers to every single question before being able to move on to the next question. This is a particular problem for those who create online questionnaires, where it is often not possible to go to a next question if another question is left blank. This is something you must discuss with your online questionnaire maker, as you will otherwise find that people do not complete the questionnaire at all.

Asking too many questions with an open end. Open ended questions require significant thinking and can easily become overly complicated.

Overusing ranking questions, or using them incorrectly. Ranking questions often have ranks from 1 to 10, but many people would prefer a 1 to 5 rank, which narrows down their choices but really still gives you the same answer.

Asking questions that have no relevance to the questionnaire. It must be very clear at all times why a question is being asked and why it is relevant to the questionnaire itself. If the question does seem out of place, make sure you include a text box to explain why you are asking this particular question and why you are asking it at that point.

Asking too many questions. This is a problematic issue. Generally, there are a lot of things you may want to know and it may be tempting to add a lot of questions. However, the more questions you ask, the more bored people will get with the questionnaire as a whole. Keep it as short as possible and try to find a way to ask multiple questions in one, by reformulating it.

Asking two questions in a single question. Again, this is very difficult. As described in point 7, it is recommended to join questions together in order to keep the overall length of the questionnaire down. However, the questions must be completely related and asked as a single question.

Create online surveys that contain far too general questions.

Not putting enough time and effort into designing the questionnaire.

Why these Mistakes Are Made?

It seems that most of these mistakes are easy to avoid when you create online questionnaires. Unfortunately, they are the most commonly found mistakes for good reason: because they are pitfalls. In essence, the tenth mistake is the most important one. So long as you take the time to think about what you want to achieve and to think about your wording, you should not fall victim of these 10 common mistakes when you create online questionnaires.
