Kolkata is the capital of the eastern state of West Bengal. Nestled on the banks of Hooghly River, Kolkata is the main commercial, cultural and educational hub of Eastern India. Guwahati is in Assam and is often referred to as the gateway to Eastern region of India. The city of Guwahati is situated between the southern bank of the mighty Brahmaputra River and the foothills of the Shillong plateau. It is famous for the world class institution of Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. A rich and diverse wildlife and birdlife can be noticed in and around the city. Besides being an attraction in its own, Guwahati is a vital tourist point as the gateway to seven other north eastern states. Sightseeing in Guwahati is not complete without a visit to its famous temples of Kamakhya, Bhuvaneswara, Navagraha and Umananda Shiva. Silk weaving trade thrives in the city suburbs.

Travelling From Kolkata To Guwahati

Guwahati is at a driving distance of about 995 km from Kolkata and it takes 18 hrs or more to reach Guwahati. The route is via Kolkata => Krishnanagar => Malda => Dalkhola => Siliguri => Sevok => Binnaguri => Falakata => Cooch Bihar =>Tufanganj => Chaper => Bongaigaon => Rangiya => Guwahati. You have to cross many check posts on the way and may need many stopovers and night halts depending on the road condition and traffic. If you are not very keen on driving a long distance, regular trains are available from Sealdah and Howrah in Kolkata to Guwahati. There are at least 14 super fast and express direct trains to choose from and the journey takes around 19 hrs, passing through Malda, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Bihar and Kokrajhar stations. The journey gives you a wonderful time to watch the tea gardens, hills and exotic nature as you enter the state of Assam.

Direct bus connectivity from Kolkata to Guwahati is poor. However, Guwahati is well connected to Kolkata by air. All major airlines including Air India have daily direct flights. Time taken from Kolkata to Guwahati by air is about 1 hr.
