subject: Check Out These Quality Matrices Before Buying A Mattress For You [print this page] What makes a quality memory mattress? Why is todays memory foam so much better than the foam of twenty years ago?
I hear these questions all the time, and understand that there is a ton of information out there, and not all of it is accurate. If you are in the market for a new mattress, and are thinking of purchasing a new memory foam mattress, here is some information to use as a guide.
First, the difference between todays foam and the foam from the 1970s. Todays foam is ventilated, has air chambers, and is open-cell. This means that air can move through each cell of the foam, allowing heat to escape. Also, todays technology allows for denser foams, which are not only slower to react, but also slower to sag. Furthermore, many manufacturers are combining different densities of foam, as well as different layers of memory foam and latex.
The first clue to the quality of a memory foam mattress is the density. Standard for a good memory foam mattress currently is 5.3 lbs/sq in. The higher the number, the more dense and firm the foam is. A 8lb memory foam is slower to react, but will last much longer and wont develop body impressions like a 3lb memory foam. Many manufacturers are also layering a 3lb softer memory foam over a 5.3lb layer. This is fine for support, but note that the 3lb layer might develop body impressions.
Some memory foam beds now have gel integrated into their foam formula. This means that there are little drops of gel mixed in with the foam. The only purpose of this is to help keep the bed cool. If you are sensitive to heat, one of these mattresses might appeal to you.
All memory foam mattresses have a base layer, or a core. The core is usually 6-7 of the finished height, and is not made of memory foam. It is usually a polyurethane foam, of a very high density. You cannot have a mattress that is entirely made out of memory foam, as you would sink in too far, down to the foundation.
In closing, the best memory foam mattress for you is going to be the one that you are the most comfortable on. Remember that you can purchase the most expensive one in the store, but if youre not comfortable on it, you wont be able to sleep.
