Bournemouth Welcomes Winter Swells

Winter can be one of the best times to surf in the UK, with heavy winds creating steady swells. And with Europes first artificial surf reef opening last year, Bournemouth is the perfect place to slap on a wetsuit and hit the winter swells.

The artificial reef has been designed for competent surfers to improve height of waves and the length of ride offered by each wave. The artificial reef should provide more suitable surfing days and a more consistent break. Though the artificial reef is not suitable for beginners, the natural waves breaking closer to shore offer the perfect learning environment. Also, a variety of surf schools are on-hand to get you coasting the waves in no time.

If you find yourself needing a break from the breaks, there are plenty of activities to fill a perfect winter break. Bournemouth has an ideal town centre for shopping, with many streets pedestrianised, and over 250 restaurants ensure a plethora of options for resting shopping-wearied feet.

If you need something other than the stunning 7-mile beach to tempt you, 2010 is a great year to visit as Bournemouth celebrates its 200th birthday. The bicentennial celebration will include a host of events throughout the year highlighting the variety of cultural, sporting, and social activities available in Bournemouth. A calendar of events is available from the Bournemouth website at www.bournemouth.co.uk.

For more information on surfing in Bournemouth, and the new surf conditions created by the artificial reef, surf journalist Ben Mondy headed out to Bournemouth to gauge reaction to the reef and do a bit of surfing himself.
