subject: Male Yeast Infections: Causes, Symptoms And Treatment [print this page]

Yeast infection does not happen only to womenYeast infection does not happen only to women. In fact, it happens to anybody regardless of sex and age, which means that it occurs in babies, older women, kids and men. Yes, male yeast infections do happen, especially in those who were not circumcised in their adolescent stage. Another group of men who are prone to have uncontrollable yeast growth are diabetics and probably, heavy alcohol drinkers.

What causes this health condition?

First of all, men tend to get this disease when fungus begins to live under the foreskin of the penis. When it multiplies and becomes out of control, it can grow even in the man's urethra and affect the prostate gland. Among the causes behind this is unprotected sex. When a man engages in unprotected sexual intercourse with a woman who happens to have uncontrollable yeast growth, the man has a chance to be infected. Another cause is the use of antibiotics, which lessen or steal away the enzymes his body needs to get rid of the fungus, Candida. Third, a man with a weak immune system is susceptible to getting this health problem, since it can no longer fight the rapid growth of the fungus in the body.

These are the other common causes to this disease:

1. Parts of the body are kept moist instead of keeping them dry, like the genitals

2. Hormonal changes or imbalances

3. Dietary changes

Symptoms of this health problem

If you think you have fungus growing and living in some of your body parts, you will easily notice the feeling because of the following symptoms:

1. Sexual dysfunction

2. Memory loss

3. Dry skin

4. Bad breath

5. Bloating

6. Diarrhea

7. Mood swings

8. Athletes feet

9. Jock itch

10. Fatigue

11. Prostrate problems

12. Craving for pasta, potato chips, sweets and other starchy foods.

Treatment for male yeast infections

1. Over-the-counter treatments like Lotrimin, Aceium, and Gentian Violet are known for preventing further growth of the fungus in other parts, and are particularly helpful if your case is not severe. If you are taking Gentle Violet, though, be sure to pay careful attention since it leaves a mild purple stain in your clothes.

2. Medications, on the other hand, like Fluconazole and Ketaconazole are prescribed by doctors to men who want to try a more tested way to get rid of the fungus. Side effects may occur, though, like allergic reactions caused by Fluconazole. Meanwhile, Ketaconazole is known to cause side effects on the liver and testosterone production.

3. Obviously, it is advisable to prevent whatever causes your health problem in the first place. Moist skin, especially around the genital area, is an enticing environment for fungal growth, and so you are suggested to wear loose and dry underwear made of pure cotton. Change it often and keep your genitals clean. Before using antibiotics, be sure to get your doctor's approval first as some antibiotics can speed up fungal growth.

All in all, male yeast infection is not as alarming as it seems. Well, it depends on the severity, of course. However, if you don't attend to it, of course the pain and burning sensation will continue and might even worsen. Which is why it is recommended that you seek proper treatment right away if you detect any sign associated with this condition.
