The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study compared the weight loss of two high protein diets. The low carbohydrate group consisted of adult males and they were given 4% carbohydrates. The moderate carbohydrate group also consisted of adult males, but they were given a 35% carbohydrate diet. Both groups found the diet palatable and no significant difference in pleasure was found.

Dr Johnstone, the doctor of the study, warns that other similar studies have shown to do damage to the gut. It was shown that certain bacteria were reduced that could adversely effect one's health.

Also important to note, anyone suffering from kidney disease should avoid a high protein low carbohydrate diet. Ketones are excreted through the urine and can cause harm to the kidneys. The harmful effects have only been present with people who already had a history of kidney disease.
