Learning Keyword Research For Search Engine Optimization

As of late, Search Engine Optimization, also known as SEO, is one of the most popular and growing advertising strategies in the world. Businesses worldwide are starting to realize and see the value of ranking high in the search engines for keywords relevant to their business as more and more consumers are turning online to see products and services.

The most important step to starting your SEO campaign is really doing the right keyword research. The backbone and essential factor of your SEO campaigns success will be from the keyword research you do.

Keyword competition and research will help you determine what keywords are most sought after but that doesnt mean its always the best keyword to optimize for because you want to make sure youre putting your time optimizing something that has potential to rank and rank well. Lets take for example the keyword cookies.

Lets say you have a website that sells cookies and you are just now starting to optimize your website. If you type in cookies in Google, you will see a return of 141 million results back from Google. What that means is that you are now competing against 141 million websites to rank for that keyword.

Even though that one keyword may drive great traffic, you need to get realistic and try to optimize for a less competitive keyword such as chocolate chip cookies. Now we narrowed that down to a long-tail keyword that Google gave back almost 3 million websites to compete with. Lets get even more detailed to try and compete better. In Google, Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies only shoots back 438,000 results! There we go, now we are ready to optimize for a much less competitive term that you can probably rank with some easy solid SEO tactics due to the low competition of this term.

Some great keyword analysis tools you can use are:

-Google Keyword Tool

-SEOBook.com Keyword Tool

-KeywordDiscovery.com

Other keywords such as Spyfu.com or SEMRush.com will allow you to get great competitive keyword research analysis on your competitors. You always want to know what keywords your competition is ranking for. It is also helpful, IF they do pay-per-click campaigns, to know which keywords they bid on which can also be an effective SEO strategy.
