Preventing Baby Crib Injury

Around 10,000 infants and toddlers are injured in a baby crib and/or a playpen each year. Many of these injuries occured among infants and toddlers that were in age range one to two years of age. This is the general age of children that are attempting to climb out of their playpen and/or baby crib. These children at this age are ready to explore more of their surroundings and seem to be more active. Many of these children may be tall enough to transfer into a toddler bed style position. Here are a few things for parents to remember to reduce many types of baby crib injury among infants and toddlers.

*Parents can help prevent injuries by lowering the infant baby crib mattress when children grow tall enough to lean over the rails. Many now have several mattress height adjustments. Parents may notice their child is becoming extremely restless within their crib. Parents may be now seeing signs they have outgrown their restricted area.

*When children are starting to lean over the rail with either their head or legs, this is a good time to transition into a toddler bed style position of your convertible baby crib or into a separate toddler bed.

*Children should be moved to a toddler bed when they reach 35 inches tall. This is a good rule of thumb for parents. A toddler bed will provide safety guard rails and are made low to the floor to reduce injury from falls. Many toddler beds require a standard baby crib mattress so child can continue to sleep on their exisiting crib mattress.

*Parents should make sure they purchase a sturdy baby crib. A well-made, stable baby crib is still the safest place to sleep for smaller infants. Parents should look for the JPMA seal to make sure the baby crib is a safe crib insuring it meets all safety standards.Small infants should be placed on their backs, with no padding or pillows. A firm mattress is suggested to prevent SIDS as well.

A convertible crib that converts into a toddler bed is a good transition for baby as they grow. The transition into the toddler bed style is much smoother and safer for the child as they are remaining in their comfort zone. The convertible crib is also cost efficient as it grows with the child.
