If you want to give your guests lasting wedding favors then living favors are a good choice. By living I mean plants, flowers, seedlings and even trees! Growing your own at home is quite easy but does require you to think about your favors early on in your wedding planning to ensure your seeds have sprouted by the time your wedding day arrives.
Giving your guests potted flowers which match your wedding flowers is a good way of coordinating your wedding favors to your wedding. But you do not have to give flowers, you could choose bulbs, herbs or vegetables or even indoor plant varieties. It is a good idea to coordinate your choice of plants to your wedding in some way, for instance wildflower varities for a meadow venue, tree seedlings for a woodland venue and vegetables for an eco-friendly wedding.
If you want to grow your own then you will need to organize it within your wedding planning. If you do not have long until your wedding day then choose quick growing varities so that you have more than little seedlings come the wedding day! You should aim to have plants which are ready to be potted into larger pots either for your wedding day or for your guests to do when they get home.
You will need large seed trays, suitable compost and somewhere to place them that is ideal growing conditions i.e. dark, warm and frost free. When choosing your plant varieties you will need to think not only about those which coordinate with your wedding but which are seasonal as well. Growing summer flowers for a fall wedding would not be practical as they would quickly die in the cooler temperatures.
Once your seeds are ready to be potted on from the seed trays you will need to think about what containers/pots you will want to present them in. The choice here is huge so find something which coordinates with your wedding, is not so large your guests would struggle to get it home and which will give your plants room to grow if potting on some time before your wedding day.
One nice idea for containers for your plants are terracotta plant pots. Use some chalkboard paint and paint an area of the pot into which you can write your guests names and use them as name cards. You could also make name card and thank you tags combined and attach them to garden sticks placed in the pots.
