subject: Infertility in Men - Possible Causes of Male Infertility [print this page]

If after a year a couple have no success in their attempts trying to conceive, they should see a doctor. Generally, one third of the time the fertility problem is in the woman, one third of the time is associated with male fertility, and the other third is a problem of both. There are many causes of male infertility that should be looked at. In general people tend to think that only the woman needs to watch her health since she will be the one with the baby inside her. That's not true. Health issues can be a factor in the causes of male infertility. If the man smokes, he has to stop smoking because smoking is known to lower sperm count. Excessive alcohol use can also affect sperm count, as can drug use. A man may want to talk to his doctor about any prescription medications that he is taking. He should watch carefully on his diet. A zinc-rich diet helps to improve sperm count, so he may consider eating more shellfish and eggs. Apart from lifestyle health factors, which can be easily managed, another common cause of men infertility is a medical condition known as varicocele. Quite simply, it's a varicose vein in the man's scrotum. The vein is very large and causes heat to accumulate in the testes. This takes a toll on the sperm. Varicocle is usually treatable, but surgery may be required in more severe cases. If there is a question about the causes of male infertility, a trip to the doctor is warranted. He will be able to determine the best course of action. The first thing that the doctor usually does is to run a sperm analysis. it's a straightforward test, especially when compared with the tests that women have to undergo. The sperm test is easy for the man, and instructions will be given by the doctor. Usually two semen samples will be examined at a one month interval, so that comparison can be made between the two samples. If there is a problem with the sperm (quantity or quality), the doctor will instruct what to do next. Otherwise he'll suggest the best action to take, or propose possible treatments for infertility to increase the man's fertility level. If a couple truly wants to have a child, both of them should check to see if a fertility problem is preventing them from conceiving.
