Plastic Surgery Bounces Back in 2010

If the annual statistics report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is any indicator, the United States is emerging from the economic recession one facelift, breast implant, and nose job at a time.

Cosmetic Surgical Procedures Rise for First Time in 2 Years

According to the agency's 2010 plastic surgery procedural statistics report, 13.1 million cosmetic procedures were performed last year, up 5 percent from 2009. The increase includes a 2 percent rise in cosmetic surgical procedures and a 5 percent gain in minimally invasive procedures.

Although minimally invasive procedures such as BOTOX injections, soft tissue fillers and chemical peels have remained steady amid the recession, surgical procedures rebounded after two years of overall downward-trending numbers.

Top Plastic Surgery Procedures

Breast augmentation remained the most popular plastic surgeryprocedure in 2010 with 296,000 breast augmentations performed, an upturn of 7,000 over 2009. Nose jobs, or rhinoplasty procedures, were the second most commonly performed plastic surgery procedure with 252,000 in 2010, although that figure is a drop of 4,000 from 2009.

Eyelid surgery, also known as eye lifts and blepharoplasty, saw an increase of 6,000 procedures in 2010 for a total of 209,000. Likewise liposuction saw a spike in 2010 with 203,000 procedures performed, a rise of 5,000 over 2009.

Tummy tucks, or abdominoplasty, rounded out the top five cosmetic surgical procedures in 2010 with 116,000, up 1,000 from 2009.

Top Minimally Invasive Procedures

Botox injections again led the pack of minimally invasive procedures, with 5.4 million treatments performed in 2010, a leap of more than a half-million from 2009. Soft tissue fillers, such as collagen, saw a modest increase of about 100,000 procedures from 2009 for a total of 1.8 million procedures in 2010.

Chemical peels were the third most popular minimally invasive procedure with 1.1 million performed in 2010, the same as 2009. Laser hair removal, however, grew by 45,000 procedures from 2009 for a total of 938,000.

Microdermabrasion was the fifth most commonly performed minimally invasive procedure in 2010 with 825,000, a drop of 85,000 from 2009.
