subject: The Single Most Important Factor When Choosing A Weight Loss Program [print this page]

So what is the single most important factor?

Most people will say that it's the potential weight loss the program can provide. Sorry - it's more important than that. What about how quickly you can lose the weight? Nope - wrong again.

The single most important factor in choosing a weight loss program is to find a plan or program that fits in with your lifestyle. Now you might be thinking - but my lifestyle is making me fat, not losing any weight for me. Of course there are aspects of your lifestyle that MUST change. But there are many things you can't change, abnd others that you really don't want to change.

Let me explain with two examples.

Sue is 24 years old, her career is on the fast-track and she works long hours. Most of her friends are single too, so they party hard all week. Sue eats out most nights, and often grabs fast food for lunch or on route to a club or pub. Sue is about 14 pounds overweight, and wants to shed the excess weight in time for her sister's wedding in 6 weeks, where she will be bridesmaid.

Michelle is 39, married with three children. She works flexi-time so she can spend time with her children. She does most of the food preparation at home, and they eat out once or twice a month. Once a week they get take-out. Michelle is still carrying much of the weight she picked up when she was pregnant, and wants to lose about 40 pounds.

Can Sue and Michelle go on the same diet and achieve their goals? Let's look at what they need in a weight loss program.

Both of them need a flexible weight loss program, one that allows them to eat food they like, and that they can choose - Sue because she eats out often, Michelle because she has to feed her family as well as herself.

Neither of them has time to work out menus and meal plans, measure and weigh and read every label for calorie content at the store. A diet program that is easy to use and does most of the work for them will be ideal.

Although Sue is looking for quick, short-term weight loss, she doesn't want to regain the weight in 3 months. Michelle doesn't mind how long it takes to lose the weight, but she definitely wants to keep it off. A radical short-term diet plan is not likely to help either of them. Their eating habits will have to change, but a weight loss program that leads to permanent improvement in eating habits will help them both maintain a healthier, slimmer lifestyle.

Sue doesn't have much time for formal exercise - most mornings she's at work early, and often goes straight from work out with friends. Michelle hasn't done any formal exercise since her firstborn arrived 12 years ago. Both of them are exhausted at the end of the day, albeit for different reasons. What they need is a weight loss program that allows them to fit exercise into their existing lives wherever they can. For Sue that may mean taking the stairs at work, getting off the subway one stop earlier and walking the rest of the way to the office, or getting involved in social sport on the weekends. Michelle may go with her husband when he walks the dogs, or take the kids to the park for a game of frisbee instead of staying home to finish the ironing. Any exercise is better than none - and that will suit Michelle and Sue better than a rigid fitness regime they won't be able to keep to.

I think you get the idea now. The Single most important factor to consider when choosing a weight loss program is how that program will fit into your lifestyle. The better the fit, the easier it will be to stick to the plan, the quicker you'll achieve the results you're looking for.
