Are There Doctors For ADHD Treatment? - Learning About Treatment Options To Raise A Great Kid

When we think that as many as 60% of children may carry ADHD into adulthood, it certainly gives us food for thought. The need for an accurate, early diagnosis and the question, are there doctors for ADHD treatment, are very pertinent issues indeed.

There is a lot of disagreement as to when ADHD starts to be noticed in a child so this will determine when the diagnosis is sought. There are horror stories about two or three year old toddlers being diagnosed and then put on amphetamine drugs!

Then there are new theories about the later development of ADHD and up to now, the age of seven has been considered as the top limit. There are now researchers who are suggesting that the upper age limit is twelve years of age. This may well be included in the fifth edition of the DSM manual due out in 2013.

Are there doctors for ADHD treatment? There are many doctors who are qualified and experienced in the ADHD field. Usually a family doctor will not have much experience with ADHD so it is better to seek a specialist such as a psychiatrist or child psychologist. Pediatricians are also fully qualified to help you with treatment as indeed are clinical social workers. The latter may be able to diagnose the condition but they are not allowed to offer or prescribe medication.

The question, are there doctors for ADHD treatment also needs to be looked at from another perspective. They should always have a proven record in specializing in this condition. As parents, we need to ask them about the treatment options. Often, this is a good test of whether the doctor is really up to speed with the latest developments. If, for example, they are not recommending behavior therapy, and lifestyle changes in addition to medication, it may well be a sign that they are behind the times.

All the medical experts are now agreed that a comprehensive program including behavior modification, attention to diet, green time activities and maybe some medication is the way to go. They may have very biased views on the medication but we know now for a fact that after three years, the effects begin to wear off. Are doctors for treating ADHD aware of this?
