Safe in the summer

Summertime is the time of year for days at the beach, barbeques in the back yard and a rise in the number of break-ins. unfortunately this trend seems to be on the increase but there are a number of things you can do to help prevent loss of personal property and sense of personal security.

Most people have the "it'll never happen to me "syndrome. However when it does happen to you, you may find with a few simple precautions most break-ins can be prevented.

When leaving home for an extended period of time cancel newspapers and any expected deliveries. This prevents goods from piling up outside your door and tipping off potential thieves to your absence. If you leave any windows open for ventilation try to keep open the 1st floor windows only, making illegal access difficult. Also ask a neighbor to park their car, at random intervals, in your driveway. This gives the impression that someone is home at different times of the day.

Neighborhood watch schemes are another option to consider. However to be effective each member must be vigilant at all times. Make note of any strangers seen regularly in the area. Write down times and a detailed description for future reference. Build a rapport with the local police department , if possible ask for random drive by patrols.

Being safe at home is important but it doesn't stop when you leave the house. When out and about your personal safety is also at risk perhaps even more so as you don't have the protection of being inside your own home. However by keeping to some basic rules you can minimize the risk of being targeted by opportunistic criminals.

First and foremost be confident, many criminals target those people who show any sign of weakness. Always keep to well-lit areas. When approaching your car or house have your keys ready to use, that way your attention is not diverted from looking through bags or purses. Carry some form of defensive device, pepper spray is a good choice.

Personal security is not just during the summer, although that time of year crime is more prevalent. The security industry is a 24hr seven day a week business and people need to be aware that their security is at risk for the same time. But with a little self-training to use a few simple techniques everybody can make their world a little safer.
