At first when you talk about the subject of changing your name it seems like a piece of cake, no sweat that won't take much time at all. Most brides believe obtaining a marriage license that uses your new last name will automatically mean you'vechanged your name, but that just isn't the case. The first place to start is with your Social Security card and driver's license.
Below is a list of the four basic steps:
1.Be sure to have a certified marriage license (make sure it has the raised seal that means it's authentic). If you need more copies call the office where you license was filled to obtain them.
2. You'll need to contact the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213. You'll hear and automated system that will walk you through the process of changing a name. Please note: your new social security card will be free (some companies may try to scamyou and charge a fee, don't fall for that).
3. Next visit the Department of Motor Vehicles. Make sure to bring identification and do not forget your certified marriage license.
4. The remaining changes should be fairly easy to take care of. Some places only require a phone call, where others may ask you for a copy of your marriage license or SSC. But be sure to notify the remaining people/places: friends and family, employers/payroll, post office, utilities and phone company, banks, credit card companies, schools and alumni, voter registration, passport, mortgages and leases, wills, insurance, and magazine subscriptions.
