5 Tips on Staying Focused and Grounding Online

If you are at all like me, then working on the computer, and staying focused on projects can be a real challenge.

Indeed, getting the project you started out with done, may be next to impossible, because of the infinite distractions that the internet provides.

Look, I know easy it is to allow yourself to go off and explore mindlessly on the internet, following link after link until you are lost in the cyber jungle, wondering how the heck you got to some Johnny come lately website about ab crunches and crocodile wrestling.

We have all been there! So don't get caught in the same old patterns, try something new!

Set goals

First of all, before you sit down at your computer it is important to have a clear and realistic goal as to what it is you are doing on the computer.

Ok, are you checking your email, doing research, writing? Remember, do what you know you have time for right now. Then determine the top things that need to be accomplished today, that must get done.

You can allow yourself to do whatever you want, after that, but once the need items are done, then you are free sailing! And set a rule that internet surfing, or research on any other topics are prohibited before you finish x amount on your project.

Create time frames

As you begin your work notice your time, and estimate how long you think it may take to finish your project, 5 minutes? 10 minutes? 1 hour?

I have found that it is best to work in 15 minute blocks, keep your eye on the clock, as it is easy to get sucked into a project and lose track of where you are headed, or the big picture.

Take deep breaths and stay grounded

Remember to breath, so that even when you are working, focusing and researching, keep an ounce of awareness on your body and your breath.

Hear your breathing, notice your surroundings, feel your fingers on the keyboard and notice the sounds that are all around you.

This technique is very useful for staying focused and grounding and not allowing the computer to throw you off kilter.

Positive Self-talk

Reward yourself by being appreciative with what you say to yourself about the work that you ARE getting done.

Success and following through on goals are not achieved through negative thinking or feeling guilty, they are created through a consistent focus on your positive achievements. Tell yourself how wonderful you are for what you are doing well, even if it is just to thank yourself for sitting down to work.

By focusing on what you are getting done, not how much, and how good it feels to stay on track, you will begin to create a sense of positivity associated with focusing and staying on track which will nurture your future attempts to stay on track in the future, and feel great in the process.

Allow for a little free searching!

After you have gotten as much work done as you need to, now it is time to blow off a little steam, allow yourself five- ten minutes of free and easy wandering, follow wherever the internet winds blow, maybe by starting it off by doing a little research on a topic that is related to what you were working on.

Have compassion for yourself

And finally, remember that learning new habits for anything is challenging and you may not succeed at it right away, that's ok. Rome was not built in a day, and a steel focus is not created right away either.

This takes time, so relax; you have just begun learning new habits that are going to allow you to become more focused, more productive and ultimately more successful.

Congratulations on your first steps towards even greater success working online!
