The severity of hair loss depends on a combination of age, genes and the male hormone called androgen, which is also present in smaller amounts in women. This type of balding, called androgenetic alopecia, is the most common form of balding. Also known simply as male pattern baldness, hair is lost in a well-defined pattern which begins at the sides of the head at the temple and recedes over time to form the characteristic horseshoe shape. At the same time, hair will thin at the top of the head and usually progress to partial or complete baldness. With more androgens in their system, hair loss due to androgenetic alopecia is more common and severe in males.
