Taking a look at the various lists of the best dressed men of 2010 that magazines and the blogosphere have produced so far, one thing that's clear is that last year wasn't a year to follow rules. A lot of trends seem to come and go and there were very little in the way of hard and fast rules about how men should dress. This led to a far more creative and eclectic selection of celebrity wardrobes to admire as men in the spotlight were able to adopt a different look for any occasion required and, refreshingly, the only common theme amongst the recurring names cropping up is an innate sense of good style.
Though still only fresh on the scene after the success of "Kick Ass", actor Aaron Johnson came out top in men's fashion bible GQ's annual Best Dressed list. The young actors' success is no doubt down to his unfussy approach to clothes, appearing on red carpets in anything from a fine Saville Row suit to a simple shirt and braces combination. Likewise, at the other end of the age spectrum, Bryan Ferry made 2010 his year of style by showing off his bold and unique sense of style with confidence. Though he's been rocking since the early-70s, the Roxy Music singer has been snapped in anything from a handmade suit to sequins which, at 65, is very impressive.
Unsurprisingly, David Beckham still featured prominently on most end-of-year style lists, as the British fashion icon continues to make his mark. Lately, he seems content to follow fashion rather than lead the way though, and was often photographed in rolled up shirt sleeves and tweeds last year. What is surprising though is that his 8 year old son, Romeo Beckham, made it into the GQ Top Fifty at number 26. Perhaps a bigger shock is that Prime Minister David Cameron made the list too, coming in at number 20, presumably for his taste in blue suits and red ties.
A name which has slowly been accumulating more and more column inches in 2010 is Robert Pattinson. Famed for his moody and one-dimensional character in the Twilight' movie series, the scruffy looking actor has come out on top in many best dressed' polls this year: including GQ's "Best Dressed Man in the World". To fashionistas the world over, this no doubt came as a surprise, but this in part just goes to prove that fashion and style are cyclical and what's in one year or season almost certainly may not be in fashion the next. Pattinson's been praised for his understated poise and elegance, with a slim build that he's accentuated through good taste in tailored outfits.
However, another common thread that readers and fans can enjoy is that designer names seem to have dropped in importance in 2010. Looking at the top 20 most commonly mentioned stylish men, most of their looks are easy and relatively cheap to replicate, with everyday High Street staples like jeans and check shirts being a common choice.
