Fat is natural and necessary for the functioning of the body. However, too much fat is unsightly, and unhealthy. There are many reasons fat will accumulate in the body and cause problems. It is important to understand weight control and weight management, in order to avoid unhealthy fat build-up.

The body's metabolic rate is the rate at which calories are processed by your organ systems. Each person has unique metabolic rate. Therefore, it is important to gain an individual understanding of how food converts into energy, what foods to eat, and how much your body needs. The body might be very slow at metabolizing, causing food calories to be stored as fat. Another cause of the accumulation of fat in a body is lack of activity. When more calories are consumed than are burned through exercise, the extra calories are stored in the body in the form of fat. High blood sugar also causes the body to convert some of the extra sugar into fat and once again store it in order to maintain a stable blood sugar level.

When excess fat is stored in your body you add strain to you muscles, bones and internal organs. This has a negative impact on your overall health.

There are three main areas in the human body that are prone to fat deposits; under the skin, surrounding the internal organs, and in the blood vessels.

When fat is stored under the skin, this person has what appears as soft, lumpy and pocked skin. This is an appearance we are all familiar with, but are not pleased with. Not everyone is destined to be a supermodel or have a "beach body". However, you should be cautious of extreme amounts of fat. Having five or ten pounds of extra fat is not alarming if you have a regular work-out routine, and eat well. If your inactive lifestyle packed with high fat and cholesterol food results in you gaining weight every year, then you should begin be concerned. Fat is dangerous because it can also be deposited around the major organs of the body. making for difficult for your body's organs to function efficiently.

This can happen to people who even appear thin and muscular. This is caused by poor diet and lack of exercise too. I call it "skinny fat." Generally, people think a thin frame excludes them from being unhealthy. Contrary to that mis-perception the impact of internal fat on your heart, liver, kidneys, and lungs is still detrimental. When this fat accumulates, it slowly squeezes the organ and the organ is unable to adequately do its job. Fat around the heart has been attributed to heart disease and heart failure as well as other cardiac complications.

Even more serious is when fat is deposited in the blood vessels. The fat coats the wall of the vessels creating a layer that grows thicker. Over time more and more fat molecules attach to the vessel walls. The space left for blood to flow becomes smaller and smaller. This increases blood pressure as the same amount of blood must pass through a more narrow space. We all know that high blood pressure is a bad thing, but it is just the beginning. If the build up goes undetected, veins can be blocked, depriving body tissues of oxygen and nutrients. Also, blood pressure building up behind the blockage can cause the vein to burst which can be fatal.
