Reasons Why Diets Don't Work
Reasons Why Diets Don't Work

Every year, thousands of people around the world set out to try new diets that promise to change their lives. Every new year, the diet and exercise industries make a killing. They make a killing, because the promise hopeful dieters that if they subscribe to the latest diet fad, they will loose weight faster than ever before. These diets all claim to be better than any other diet ever invented. All of the diet gurus promise that if you subscribe to their diet plan, then there will never be a need for a diet ever again. There are a couple things wrong with these over-inflated claims and statements. First, do you ever wonder why you see these diet gurus of the moment everywhere, and after a few years, you never see heads or tails from them again? Second, the diet industry is just that, an industry. People are in it to make money. Why would someone sell you a diet plan that would work for the rest of your life? If the diet worked for the rest of one's life, this would destroy the industry. This would hit the diet guru where it hurts, in their wallet. Do you really think that they are going to create a system that works for the rest of your life?

This leads to the topic of why diets don't work. First, diets don't work, because they set people up for unrealistic expectation in a couple of ways. First, diets set people up to eat in ways that are unnatural, or that are unhealthy. While there are a few who are obsessed with the latest eating plans, most people will revert to their old ways of eating if they feel dissatisfied with the diet eating plan. The key to loose weight, and to keep it off, is to create an eating plan that can be sustained. If a person isn't going to sustain the diet plan, then they will not only fail at their diet plan, they will gain even more weight back. Yo-Yo dieting, and inconsistent dieting creates shock to the body.

Second, diets don't work, because they don't teach responsible eating. More to the point, diets teach magic bullet thinking. The key to loose weight isn't hard to figure out. Take in less calories, and burn off more calories. This will create a calorie deficit. The calorie deficit in time will translate into the loss of pounds. The key is to not only create a calorie deficit, but to create one that is reasonable. Eating special diet treats and substitutes doesn't teach a person to let go of the unhealthy snacks. Drinking special shakes doesn't teach a person to eat health and balanced meals that are frankly more filling and delicious. All snacks and shakes create is the desire for more snacks and shakes.

Third, diets don't work, because a person has to be taught to eat in a way that sustains for life. It's not reasonable for a person to eat in a way that promotes weight loss forever. Therefore, when a person reaches their goal weight, they have to be taught to eat in a way that maintains the goal. Most people are taught to either punish themselves, or gorge themselves. Diets don't work, because they don't teach healthy balance.
