There isn't anybody that wouldn't enjoy a brand new shiny boat. Buying a new yacht would be a wonderful accomplishment, but do not spend more than your budget can afford and then never be able to use it. Always investigate what items come with the boat and if they are what you want before you make your purchase.
Types of Construction
GRP
Practically all cruising yachts today are manufactured from GRP construction. This is due to GRP material being easy to fix, strong and durable. The only major problem involves osmosis because the blisters that are formed can cost a fair bit to repair.
Steel
The strongest material available is steel and is a great idea. In fact, steel boats have rammed into banks and reefs resulting in only minor scratches. Rust is the only real enemy of steel. Thoroughly painting and priming all surfaces will help to deter all forms of rust.
Aluminum
The best quality, custom built yachts on the market, are built of aluminum. Just be sure that if you are considering an aluminum yacht that it wasn't built by an amateur; it could cause problems later on.
Wood
Wood still is a good choice with lots of possibility and is the most used yacht building material. If the proper type of wood is used, your yacht will last as long as those made from other materials. However, maintaining wood is costly, especially if you paint the yacht yourself.
Ferro-cement
Concrete boats have existed for a long time. Hulls were able to be cheaply constructed in the 1970's. It is a very strong construction method when done correctly.
Rigs
Popular yacht rig choices are sloop, cutter and ketch in that order. The sloop is simplistic, but the cutter and ketch rigs can divide the sail plan forming more manageable areas. The ketch rig can sail under mast and headsail, whereas the cutter rigs require a twin headsail with the option of a downwind.
Essentials Versus Desirables
Make a list of what you want in a yacht and things that would be nice to have prior to going shopping for one. Although it can get extremely expensive very quickly, lots of add ons and additions are available for yachts.
You must organize your budget before you shop for a yacht. It might require some saving in order to buy that desired boat because it can be very costly. If you have some extra money, you surely would enjoy sailing on a yacht!
