Island Romance Weddings and Honeymoons
Island Romance Weddings and Honeymoons

Although many cash-strapped Brits have been forced to cut back their foreign holidays in recent years, one demographic that won't be beaten down is newlyweds. Exotic destinations still feature prominently in the favourite choices of couples looking for somewhere sunny to tie the knot or to celebrate their new union - particularly tropical islands that offer a taste of paradise on Earth.

Islands offer a greater degree of privacy for couples that can't usually be experienced when visiting major cities and other inland areas, so it's no surprise that these idyllic locales would be in the top running for honeymoons. Weddings may be more surprising however, at least to traditionalists, as it seems fewer British couples than ever before are choosing traditional wedding ceremonies at their local churches, instead favouring foreign beaches and other impromptu destinations overseas.

On a practical level, this can mean that it's less of a leap to the honeymoon, and the newlyweds won't have to make the mad dash from the church to the airport to begin enjoying their first holiday in matrimony. Many destinations across the world have been wedding and honeymoon favourites for decades, while others have emerged more recently.

Among the latter variety is the Maldives, an island nation in the Indian Ocean that has become number one for luxury holidays and romantic breaks thanks to the rise of numerous luxury resorts Maldives, many of which incorporate spa facilities to help make it a holiday to remember. Remote, scenic and extravagant, the Maldives is sure to be a firm favourite among couples of all ages for many years to come.

A little less isolated but still popular among newlyweds is the Malaysian island of Langkawi, where jungle scenery can create a honeymoon or wedding with a real difference. Thailand is also home to many island paradises that are well suited to romantic escapes, especially when favouring less crowded destinations such as Koh Tao over the more crowded Koh Samui.

You don't have to fly long haul to get away from it all though, and there are great island wedding and honeymoon destinations a little closer to home too. Italy's serene Amalfi Coast is one such example, where islands such as Capri offer stunning views over Naples, Vesuvius and other exquisite scenery. The island is home to a number of luxury villas specialising in honeymoons, so couples can look forward to exceptional service during their romantic Italian honeymoon.
