Choosing the correct pair of snowshoes can enhance your experience greatly. Many snowshoe manufacturers have now created snowshoes to accommodate a women's specific gait and stance as more and more have taken up the sport. Learn the differences between them to find the perfect pair for you before heading out into "No Man's Land".

Technology has evolved significantly since the time of hunters and gatherers. Vast improvements have been made in the manufacturing process, construction and materials. This has expanded the main purpose and usage and now benefits a larger number of people, especially women, interested in taking up the sport. Years of research and development have contributed to extremely efficient snowshoes which ultimately leads to more time spent outdoors.

Western Tail Snowshoes are by far the most common. They have a round, rugged shape which can be easily transferable to the largest number of people and the widest variety of uses. The main usage would be recreational on groomed trails or flat and slightly rolling terrain. A majority of the rentals will be the Western Tail type of snowshoe as they are perfect for a few hours out. The exception to this rule would be the Msr brand. They are rather unique in design as they employ the use of a unibody deck with brake bars. It offers an unheard of 360 degree grip in the steepest and iciest of conditions. These are best suited for serious work on terrain most of us will never see.

V-Tip Tail snowshoes are an innovative design that has been bio-mechanically engineered. They offer an efficient stride as they complement a woman's natural stance and gait. Typical usage can range to a variety of conditions. They will still offer an ample amount of flotation in relatively deep snow but as they have been specifically made for women they tend to be a bit narrower in width so that you don't need to adapt your walking style. This creates an easy and effortless motion so that no energy is wasted. Another benefit to the V-Tip tail is the reduced surface area which lightens the load on the back of the snowshoe and keeps snow from collecting. Most of the frames are made up of a lightweight Aluminum for increased durability and the bindings have been specially adapted to meet the needs of women. EVA padding for comfort with a slender fit for the utmost control are just some of the features.

Tapered Tail snowshoes have an exaggerated teardrop shape with a shovel nose which is best as an athletic application. Typical usage is for high performance on groomed trails or flat, slightly rolling terrain. The streamlined design and lightweight materials can allow users the ability to continue with aerobic activities when the weather turns in the winter. And the narrow construction helps to maintain a normal stride for running, jogging or faster paced walking as it doesn't hinder gait. Bindings generally will conform to your favorite pair of athletic shoes and the snowshoes themselves are sized as a one size fits most. This offers the most variety to the greatest number of people. Consider using a speed gaiter that attaches around the ankle for additional comfort and warmth.

Knowing the differences between the snowshoes for women can lead to an informed decision. This will be sure to enhance your experience outdoors and when the winter blues are settling in nicely for some folks you'll know something they don't. Just because it's cold outside doesn't mean you shouldn't fill your lungs with refreshing, crisp air and get moving in a healthy direction.
