Eat Breakfast to Lose Weight

Start the day with a filling and nutritious meal and you will give your metabolism a kick start. You'll feel full until lunch time with no temptation to snack your way through the morning. A Nielsen's National Eating Trends Survey showed that women who ate cereal on a regular basis weighed about nine pounds less than those who ate cereal rarely or not at all, while men who ate breakfast weighed about six pounds less than men who didn't eat breakfast.

1. Get in the habit

If you're too busy in the morning, prepare as much as you can the night before. If you can't stomach anything first thing try just a glass of pure, unsweetened fruit juice, a banana, yoghurt or slice of toast. Get into the habit of trying different dishes at breakfast and enjoy it!

2. Whole-grain cereals

Cereal has always been a good breakfast option. With so many flavors and brands to choose from, there's something for everyone. Be sure to check the sugar content since some have a lot of it. Too much sugar will give you a lot of energy real quick but will also leave you tired once the sugar rush wears off.

3. Fresh fruits and yogurt

Fresh fruit salad will provide a slow release of energy to get you through until lunchtime and also give you a healthy top up of vitamins and minerals. Yogurt is high in calcium, protein and promotes good gastrointestinal health with the use of live cultures.

4. Eggs and toasts

Eggs are an excellent and compact source of nutrients, are relatively low in calories (75kcals each if boiled / poached) and contain very little saturated fat. Use wholemeal toasts and resist the butter / spread - try marmite instead! Accompany with a glass of fruit or vegetable juice.

5. Cut liquid calories

tarbucks may seem like heaven on a Monday morning, and that's fine if you stick to black coffee or an Americano. But other options aren't so great. The Blended Frappuccino Grande has 241 calories, while the Cocoa Grande (low fat) has 433 calories. This is more than half the calories you should be consuming for your whole breakfast and most of them are from sugars. Skip your morning juice, too, and instead have a glass of low-fat milk, or water down the juice (half glass of juice to half glass of water) to reduce the amount of sugars and calories.
