Hundreds of hot springs known locally as Onsens dot the landscape of Japan. The natural hot springs have been developed into spas where people can rejuvenate and relax. There are many hot spring baths and resort towns in Japan.

The popular Kusatsu Hot Spring Resort is located in the Gunma region. The town boasts of 100 hot springs which gush out 11 million gallons of water per day. The water is supposed to have anti-bacterial properties and is reputed to cure every sickness. A hot water field known as Yubatake in the local language is located in the centre of the town. The high temperature of the water is cooled by wooden channels and then sent to the several baths.

Hakone located in the Kanagawa Prefecture is also a popular hot spring resort town. It is easily accessible from Tokyo. There are many baths and inns at Hakone and one can find hot springs near Lake Ashi as well. In some places in Hakone, hot spring spa resorts and water parks have been set up where one can enjoy various water activities as well as relax in the warm water.

Hokkaido's Noboribetsu is another hot spring resort of Japan popular among both natives and foreigners. The Gero Onsen resort is located on the banks of River Hida north east of Gifu city. It is one of the top resorts of Japan and has many ryokans and hotels. These places have indoor as well as outdoor onsens and some have private ones as well for families. There are open air spas known as rotemburo and public baths as well. Gero is a beautiful town with many activities for the visitors.

Arima hot spring resort is situated near the city of Kobe. It is one of the oldest hot spring resorts in Japan. The hot water of Arima comes in various shades such as brown, red and transparent depending upon the content of iron and other minerals. There are ryokans with baths and public baths. The place also features high end hotels and souvenir shops and is a perfect place for visitors.
