If you want to have some fun and lose some weight at the same time, you have got to try bicycle riding! Believe me, I should know! Having struggled to lose weight for about 15 years, I went on and off diets and began to run in order to shed more pounds. What happened was that I lost very little weight and gained a bigger appetite. My efforts in running werealso short-lived, as I tended to lose my breath and soon gave up.
But in the meantime, I began cycling --- not so much to lose weight, but for recreation. I explored local streets and before long, rode further and further. Cycling was really fun and turned out to be something that I enjoyed doing and even more important, helped me to lose weight.
My point is that if I can lose weight from cycling, so can you! True, cycling takes a little time and effort, but before long, you'll find that you will become addicted to it. You can ride alone or with a group. Here are a few tips to get you started:
- Get a check-up from your doctor first and follow his or her advice.
- For now, use your own bike or buy a used bike. After you've gained some riding experience, you will be better able to decide what kind of bicycle is best for you. Also, remember to obtain a water bottle, helmet and gloves. You may also want to consider riding shorts and tops.
- Make up a simple cycling schedule that has you riding at least 30 minutes per riding session in order to benefit from your efforts.
- Consider joining a cycling group ride. You can ask about such rides at your local bike shop and sign up for a scheduled ride of your choice. Rides are classified into categories, such as "beginner" and "experienced" cyclists. You'll enjoy the camaderie and actually ride more miles than you thought you could! Another thing to remember is that rides for beginners are generally on flat roads and feature frequent breaks and slower riding pace. You'll also discover that all groups include slower and faster riders.
