Tips for Writing Your Best Man Speech

Chances are, if you've been chosen as a best man, you know the groom pretty well. And maybe by now you're aware that everyone is expecting you to give a best man speech - a toast - at the wedding reception. If you need help preparing this speech, here are a few tips to bear in mind.

*Plan it! Don't make it up on the fly. Even if you're quick-witted (of course you are!), even the most glib person's mind can go completely blank without warning.

Even if you don't feel like writing the whole thing down, at least take the time to jot down a few key points and phrases.

*Humor is good, but don't forget to be serious. Okay, that's an oxymoron, but it's important. If you're not a little bit funny, you could wind up boring the wedding guests.

However, it's imperative to remember that your best man speech is a tribute to a couple's new life together. Both of them are taking their marriage seriously, and they need to know that you honor that. While sarcasm might be fun in the right situations, it is very dangerous territory and should NEVER be used in a wedding speech.

*Be brief. Please don't go on and on. Before the big day, practice giving your speech in front of another person. Watch them. If their eyes glaze over, you need to trim down your speech.

*Careful with the anecdotes. Telling stories about old girlfriends or reminding the assembled guests of a particularly embarrassing moment will not endear you to your friend's new wife. And trust me, if his wife doesn't like you, you won't be seeing much of your buddy after the wedding.

*Talk about something you like or admire about the bride-- if it's appropriate! Don't forget, you want to be endearing yourself to her.

*Last but not least, be sincere. There's a reason why you were chosen to be the best man. Keep that in mind and share in the joy of your friend's happiness. Then, your best man speech will be remembered fondly.

Excited yet worried about giving that Best Man Speech?
