The Internet Is Loved And Feared

The Internet is both loved and feared because of it's anarchic qualities. The modern Internet is virtually uninhibited by any law or regulating forces on the freedom of speech or expression. This goes double for the search engines that help us to find our way around the massive information highway. Search engines are governed by formulas called algorithms, which aid them in organizing and ranking which websites appear when you search for particular terms. These formulas, or algorithms, involve important variables which can be manipulated by Internet users.

Almost every Internet user utilizes Google as a reviewer of businesses, restaurants, and people. Think about it, last time you went out to a restaurant you didn't knowdid you first Google it? Last time you applied for a job, did you Google the business? Everyone, at one point or another, has Googled their own name to find out what others have said about them, which of their social networking sites shows up, etc.

Now imagine you input your name, or the name of your business for you entrepreneurs out there, into a search engine and the links you saw were all negative; Links deriding your work ethic, your personal integrity, or making false accusations about your business acumen. This can be quite damaging to others' perception of you, or your business. The industry of online reputation management has sprung up in response to this need for damage control. Online reputation management companies can influence the algorithms that control search results in order to give you the opportunity to publicize yourself in a positive manner, rather than being subjected to the allegations of anonymous Internet users.
