How to Cure Sciatica while Pregnant

A growing belly as in the case of a progressing pregnancy, naturally puts a lot of strain on the muscles of the lower back, abdomen and hips. When the sciatic nerve comes under pressure on account of the head of the baby in the uterus rubbing against it, it results in sciatica and the pain that comes with it. Hence the aim is to relieve the pressure on the sciatic nerve so as to relieve the discomfort which is faced by the pregnant lady, and in this, exercise plays an important part.

It has been proved, that exercise provides relief in the case of sciatica, by strengthening the core muscles of the abdomen, lower back, and hips. It also helps in the later stages of pregnancy, if these muscles are flexible. Strong muscles help in maintaining correct posture, which in turn keeps the spine properly aligned, which would otherwise be very difficult in view of the size of the belly. Additionally exercises would help with circulation, and increase the aerobic ability of the individual.

Exercises during pregnancy should be very moderate, so as not to exhaust the lady. Approximately 15-20 minutes 3 to 4 times a week should suffice. Some very mild exercises are given below:

1. Sit erect on a chair with your shoulder relaxed. Bring the ankle of the left foot and put it on the right knee. Bend forward a little and hold this position for 5 seconds. Relax and do the same exercise with the other foot. By this exercise, your hips will become flexible.

2. Stand with your feet 2 feet apart. Bend the left leg, and simultaneously put the right foot up on the heel. By this, the back of the leg will stretch. Hold for 5 minutes relax. Repeat with the other leg. Do five stretches on each leg.

3. Hold a sturdy piece of furniture and get ready to do some squats. Keep the shoulders relaxed, keep an erect posture, and do 20 squats.

4. Sit on the floor with the back against the wall. Bend your legs at the knees, and keep the soles of the feet in contact with each other, toes matching. Press down on your knees with your hands, while holding the back straight. This will stretch the hips and lower back.

By doing these exercises, the uterus would lift off the sciatic nerve, and the pain will be relieved, and you can go on to have a cool and comfortable pregnancy.

Note: It is important to keep your doctor informed prior to commencing on any exercise programme since your activities would need to be closely monitored during this period.
