Choosing the right jewellery for your wedding day

For most onlookers at a wedding, the most important part of the bride's appearance is her dress. However, while finding that perfect dress is a fundamental component of a bride's wedding experience, her accessories matter just as much. Indeed, a relatively plain dress could look far more stylish when framed with the right jewellery, shoes and hairstyle. Nevertheless, selecting the correct jewellery can be a tricky task, one for which it's important to enlist the help of family and friends for a range of second opinions.

Traditionally, many brides opt for a set of wedding jewellery. This usually consists of a pair of earrings, a necklace and a bracelet but can also include a tiara. Today, however, elaborate jewellery sets are seen as unfashionable and outdated so instead, brides choose just one or two of these options. Crucially, it's important to purchase wedding jewellery after the bridal dress has been bought. That way, the style of the dress can inform the jewellery selection that is ultimately made.

For instance, if you're a bride and your wedding dress is high-necked or is heavily embroidered across the chest and shoulders, a necklace will add unnecessary weight to the area around your neck. Similarly, a long-sleeved dress is unlikely to require a bracelet. However, both of these styles will benefit from the addition of earrings, which will draw attention towards the face and give the bridal outfit more balance.

Some modern fashion gurus may suggest avoiding wearing earrings and a necklace together. However, if your wedding dress is low-necked and you have short hair or you'll be wearing it up, earrings and a necklace can be a very sophisticated match. If you are choosing this approach, it's best to stick to classic jewels and precious metals, like pearls, diamonds, silver and gold, to maintain the feeling of luxury with which weddings are associated. You may also want to consider wearing studs with an elaborate necklace and drop earrings with a simple chain so that both items of jewellery complement rather than compete with one another.

If you want to give your wedding jewellery a unique sense of style, consider tweaking the more traditional items to suit your personality. For example, choose a sophisticated wedding choker instead of a necklace for a more sensual edge, or opt for bangles and an anklet instead of a bracelet to add a harmonious clink to your walk up the aisle. And if you really want to look like a princess, a decorative hair ornament like a tiara is a must. Wedding tiaras offer a style that marries old-world traditionalism with a more modern sense of ostentatiousness and can be found in a range of styles. They'll also look great sitting above your veil - as well as helping to keep it in place.
