1. Learn to use your basic tools.

Imagine if you had a store and didn't know how to use the cash register. You'd have a difficult time making sales transactions, right? With an Internet based business, your computer is your cash register and it's important you become familiar with the basic operations. It's important that you know how to cut, past, and copy text, open documents, save documents, and use word,lotus, and database software. You will need to learn how to install software and configure Internet software such as browsers, e-mail programs and newsreaders. You also need to learn how to use three or four different search engines, how to register your site at the top ten search engines, how to go to specific web addresses, and how to download files and programs. For e-mail, learn how to send attachments, create signature files, keep text files on hand to send to answer customer inquiries, how to prepare files for an auto-responder and how to organize your e-mail. All of this may sound so very simple to some of you, but to the "newbies" it can be overwhelming!

2. Understand that the your site is only part of an overall marketing program.

If you have a website and do no marketing, you are bound to be disappointed. Websites are meant to be part of an overall marketing strategy. As the web grows, it becomes more and more difficult for people to find your site. At this point, only about 50% of websites even get into the search engines, so on-line and offline marketing is a must! All print ads or other media ads should mention your site. Once people get to your site, you can give them more information.

3. Become part of the Internet community.

Get to know other site owners who have information, products, or services that they offer that are similar to yours. Participate in newsgroups and mailing lists. Create cross links with them so that you share visitors. Often large sites that cater to your customers will give you a link if you have interesting information or products their clients can use as well. Using a strong signature file will increase business. There are many ways for people to get to know you and your services.

4. Support on line marketing.

How many times have you bought something on-line? If you aren't doing it and you have a website, you aren't supporting the concept of on-line sales. What's keeping you from buying on-line? If you understand your reluctance then you can understand why you have to work hard to get people to buy what you are selling.

5. Learn about what works.

There are many resources that discuss what works and what doesn't. What worked in 1999 is not going to work in the 21st century! There's a reason why trade magazines are popular-they help people to better understand their field of interest or business. Understand yours.
