What annoys you the most about your young daughter's bedroom? The eyeball searing shades of pink? The shattered plastic remains of former toys? The ghastly marketing tie-in princess pictures. Yuk. You don't spend whole evenings there so you've not given it as much thought as you might. But you've had enough now and you're gonna do something about it. Well, with a few wall stickers, a simple mural and a few imaginative storage solutions you can turn it all around. It won't break the bank and who knows, you may end up spending more time there!
One needn't be Michelangelo to create an arresting mural, a broad brush approach to a landscape with rolling fields and clear blue sky is comparatively easy and the details such as a fairytale castle for instance could easily come in the form of a self-adhesive decal. Just bear in mind the scale of the sticker against the landscape, she won't mind if it's skewed but you will! Need some animals in the landscape? No worries, stickers again. Birds in the sky, zebra in the foreground.
And why stop at the walls? That chest of drawers could be brightened up the same way, and the bedstead, and the wardrobe As ever, the only limit is your imagination and the imagination of the room's occupant. Yes, that's right, get her to help!
As for the piles of junk she's accumulated in her short life it would be tempting to sneak it all out and down to the council tip but you can guarantee something vital will go in the operation and all hell will break loose as a result.
An enormous box or chest of some kind is hopeless because it will just fill up to the brim and the stuff at the bottom may as well be on the moon. Clear plastic stacking storage boxes aren't very pretty so what do you do? You don't want the stuff on show but it still needs to be accessible.
What we've done is buy two low level shelving units in white from IKEA and in the cubby holes we've put shallow wicker baskets from Dunelm Mill so our daughter now has a great expanse of counter space to play on and all her toys are to hand and at her level so they can actually be found. If you're feeling brave you can separate the toys into types and maybe even persuade your little princess to keep it like that. Another idea you might try is curtaining off the front of the shelves so that the insides are invisible.
So there it is, paint, wall stickers, inexpensive furniture and the whole thing sorted. Now drag in an armchair and a glass of wine and enjoy your efforts.
