Type 2 Diabetic Diet: All About Carbohydrates, Fiber, & Salt

When my patients ask about the best type 2 diabetic diet, I tell them that there is no such thing as long as they remember the basics. Each diet varies for each person, so what is important is to know the guiding principles behind the diet.

There are three things that you would have to consider and take note of when you are undergoing a type 2 diabetic diet carbohydrates, fiber, and salt.

Carbohydrates are healthier for diabetes if they are in their complex form, since at such form they are digested slowly as opposed to simple carbohydrates that can easily be digested. Otherwise, if carbohydrates are quickly digested and broken down into glucose, there would be an irregularity in the production of insulin. To get more of these healthier complex carbohydrates, try eating more whole grains, vegetables beans, and nuts. For instance, you can opt for wheat bread, brown rice, and potatoes. Be conscious however on the amount of carbohydrates that you take per day, since there are still limits.

Another important thing that you have to consider is the amount of fiber you take per day. Fiber, a good source of vitamins, is actually the indigestible part of plant foods and it greatly improves digestion. It has also been shown in different studies that high fiber diets have been associated with lower risks of high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and even strokes. Further, fiber also delays the absorption of sugar, which helps control blood sugar levels. It helps reduce bad cholesterol, prevents constipation, reduces intestinal disorders, and can even help reduce weight.

Salt is one other factor in a diabetes diet that should also be considered since high levels of salt can increase risks of high blood pressure that comes with diabetes. Thus, limit your intake of salty food like canned meats, canned soups, processed foods, canned sauces, pickled foods, and food with monosodium glutamate (MSG).

Remembering these three food factors is very important when undergoing type 2 diabetic diet since they can greatly affect blood sugar levels as well as your risks in heart diseases or high blood pressure.
