This is why so many people choose to come down to the Caribbean for their weddings and honeymoons. There are so many different locations to choose from in the Caribbean when planning your special day - Aruba is just one. Here is some background information that may be of interest to those intending to marry here.
Aruban Churches and Religion
Aruba is located approximately 18 miles (29 km) off of the Paraguana Peninsula of Venezuela. It is one of the Lesser Antilles islands, and is about 19 miles (30.6 km) long and 5 miles (8 km) wide. It is known for its year-round sunny climate, has moderate annual rainfall, and generally is not hit by hurricanes like other areas of the Caribbean, making it a popular choice to hold Caribbean weddings.
The Chapel of Alto Vista is one of the best recognised churches in Aruba. It is especially known for its dramatic setting above the sea. It was the first Roman Catholic church constructed in Aruba, in 1750, and was reconstructed in 1953. The chapel is quite small and is coloured bright yellow. It is reached by a winding road that has white crosses alongside to mark the Stations of the Cross. Many Arubans consider this location to be a place for peace and mental reflection.
Arguably, the second most important Roman Catholic religious meeting place in Aruba is the Santa Ana Church, which was constructed in 1776 and is situated in Noord, not far from the downtown Oranjestad area. The church has been rebuilt twice, in 1831 and in 1886. It was renovated in 1916.
It is known today for its solid oak, hand-carved altar - a work of art that epitomises the Neo-Gothic design. It has even been given recognition for its uniqueness and beauty - an exhibition award in Rome in 1870 that was later given to Santa Ana Church by the Antonius Church in Scheveningen, the Netherlands.
To show the importance of their faith, local Catholics in Aruba make a pilgrimage on foot on Good Friday from Oranjestad to Alto Vista Chapel. Roman Catholicism is the most practised religion on the island of Aruba.
Caribbean Weddings- Aruban Wedding Favours and Foods
In Aruba, sweet local candies add a local flavour to Caribbean weddings. Cocada, a type of coconut candy, is known to be a great, inexpensive wedding favour. Tamarind balls are another popular snack on the island of Aruba. Dutch and Belgian chocolates are also easily obtainable on the island. All of these make wonderful wedding favours for your special day.
There are also many local crafts that can be incorporated into Caribbean weddings to give them a unique Aruban flavour. There is pottery that is decorated with local scenes, miniature artwork, and cigars that are made with Aruban tobacco.
