Wedding Ceremonies in Australia
Wedding Ceremonies in Australia

Australia's wedding ceremonies and customs are largely varied, like the country's multi-cultured society. Customs are influenced by religion, beliefs, social conditions, value systems, lifestyle and location amongst others. Nevertheless, Australians by and large follow traditions of the rest of the Western world, which are heavily derived from English, Scottish, and Irish customs. There are some who follow Aboriginal customs too.

For some people in Australia the traditional ceremony is the only option, while others may prefer pagan ceremonies, a hand fasting ritual or even a medieval ceremony. Adventurous couples often give themes which they can socially relate to, such as a Gothic themed ceremony. And more romantic couples choose to write the entire ceremony themselves personally, or have one exclusively written for them to fit in a theme or personal values followed.

The wedding service and reception traditions are generally similar to the ones followed by the British. In Australia, for example, exchanging of rings, wedding cake, and reception attended by friends and extended family are similar to most parts of the world. As is customary, Australian wedding services and receptions are attended by the family members of the bride's as well as the groom's

Over time, many generations have passed on wedding traditions to the next generation. They have been created, followed, changed, and adapted, keeping in mind the culture followed. The concept of a white wedding is one such tradition. In the face of many social upheavals and trend changes in Australia, the notion of a white wedding has remained firm. It has transformed from a minority following, to a majority practicing. In the past, the white dress worn by the bride symbolized purity and virginity, but today, white is worn as fashion and a must. Formal or informal wedding ceremony, Australian brides will wear white nonetheless.

An old custom of Australians started in the 19th century for weddings was to give the bride a bible as a wedding gift. This was passed on from generation to generation and was kept as a souvenir, with the births and deaths of family members duly recorded and maintained.

Australia is a very casual nation when it comes to marriages, and it is the one of the few country's where weddings are permitted to be held, almost anywhere. Generally, Aussies prefer weddings to be a very informal affair, and many wedding ceremonies as well as receptions are held outdoors in parks, on the beach and in family or public lawns.

Weddings in Australia are social events that usually bring a whole lot of people together for a fun and frolic time celebrating the start of a new couple's life together. Traditional Australian foods are prepared and served such as fish and chips or Aussie' burgers with bacon, pineapple, onion, fried eggs and beets.

An Australian wedding reception can feature a varied range of music, anything from traditional English and American music to bagpipes, flutes and at times even the eerie melody of the Aboriginal didgeridoo.

Even though wedding ceremonies are mostly relaxed affairs, on the rare occasion it is demanded, it can be as formal and up-market as any other country in the world.
