subject: What Is Medical Specimen Delivery? [print this page]

Medical specimen delivery involves the courier transportation of special materials which are classified as being as medical in nature by various transportation governing entities. This means a few things. First of all, when you're delivery a medical specimen you can't simply use any Phoenix courier service that you want to use. Instead, you have to find a courier company that is specially licensed and has all of the required permits which are required to move anything which is classified as a medical specimen. The paperwork is only part of the requirements though, because in addition to being legal, they also have to have the required equipment to move these types of deliveries. If medical specimen deliveries aren't kept at the exact right temperature they can be destroyed and rendered useless before they reach their destinations, so specially refrigerated units that are designed to transport these types of items are required by any medical courier that makes these types of deliveries.

There are various types of medical material that need to be shipped, but a 'specimen' typically indicates that this is something that is being shipped for testing purposes. Most of the equipment required to carry out all but the most basic medical tests is both very large, and extremely expensive. This means that there are almost no hospitals around which can afford to have all the required testing equipment to perform every possible test, and most clinics and offices won't have any at all. Therefore, whenever a sample is drawn from a patient for testing purposes, it is referred to as a specimen and needs to be transported by a medical courier to the appropriate testing facility so that the doctors get the information they require to make their diagnosis. The specimen could be anything, including blood, urine, saliva, or various types of tissue samples.

In addition to keeping the specimens at the right temperature, there are two other responsibilities faced by medical delivery specialists. They need to have special transportation units which also help to protect any damage happening to the specimen itself, such as if they vehicle was in an accident, so all packages need to be secured properly. Many also have an emergency delivery division, in which a specimen can be rushed at top possible speed to the testing facility. This option is typically only going to be used when immediate results are required for the sake of the patient's life.
