Would you ask for careers advice from a 13 year old?
Why would anyone in their right mind think that a play-station fixated, newly pubescent, angst ridden teenager was a good source of decision making? I can't think of anyone I would trust less to make a major life decision for me. So why do we do it? The bewildering choices that schools now offer of BTEC, GCSE, Vocational, level 1 and National awards which start to channel students' education in year 9; that's the third years to anyone who is over 35. It would be a tough choice even for a mature person to make.
In addition to the positive choices are the subjects that have to be left out. Schools are forced, due to timetabling and staffing restrictions, to put together mixes that one subject choice will exclude another. This may mean that selecting say GCSE dance may exclude Imedia. We as concerned adults encourage and cajole youngsters to use sensible and mature criteria such as; what subjects are you likely to do well in? What would you like to do after you have left school? We employ our knowledge and wisdom saying things such as. "Well Mary, you need double science to take biology 'A' level and that's a requirement to go to medical college". At the same time what most troubles the kids is what their mates are likely to choose and whether or not they can get away from that horrible drama teacher!
Friends and friendships are a key ingredient for all of us. Just maybe the kids are right. Perhaps we should continue to use this as criteria for getting on in life and planning our careers. How different our society might be if we spent our working time with people we really liked. We are now supposed to be one of the unhappiest societies in Europe, and not just because we are meteorologically challenged. There is almost inevitably a term for this, it is called 'happiness poverty'. Our happiness poverty is now documented in several well respected surveys and reports. Research from the University of York, on behalf of The Child Poverty Action Group found that the UK came 24th out of 29 countries while UNICEF (The United Nations Children's Fund ) found that the UK came bottom of a "child well-being" league which compared 21 industrialised nations.
