Reasons Why The French Celebrate Mardi Gras

The festival is an extravagant festival famously held in France. It literally means Fat Tuesday. It is a festival that let the Catholics indulge in a feast before sacrificing for the Lenten week. There are many reasons why The festival is celebrated in France.

1. The first possible answer to the question, why is The festival celebrated in France is because it is an extravagant and happy festival. According to historical records it was started by the ancient Catholics as a means of pacifying other people in France with pagan religions. It was their way of showing their respect to other religions.

2. The second possible answer to the question, why is carnival celebrated in France is because many centuries ago it was used by the Catholic church in France as a way to attract more people to convert to Catholicism. It is an event where everyone can feel equal. It is also an event where people back then can have fun without being Catholic yet. It is a good way because it was able to link a very pagan event to a Christian religion aspect because it is linked to the Lenten season.

3. The third possible answer to the question, why is carnival celebrated in France is because the French wanted to have a precursor to the Roman feast called Lupercalia in the middle ages. These festivals were events where people can become unruly and people can just do everything they want. The Catholic Church thought of having this celebration incorporated as a pre-Lenten event so people can be controlled on how they celebrate it.

4. The fourth possible answer to the question, why is carnival celebrated in France is because the Catholics centuries ago clamored to have a particular day to indulge in food and wine before they go on forty days of fasting and other sacrifices. The Catholic Church then wanted to highlight the Lenten season by having one big feast because most of the protestant churches back then did not give attention for Lent.

5. The last possible reason for why carnival is celebrated in France was because the Catholic Church wanted to instill discipline to the French Catholics centuries ago. They wanted to teach them a lesson that they can have the carnival day for indulgence and for having so much fun but during the Lenten season, they cannot do this anymore. It was a particular day given for the Catholics to be merry.
