subject: An Overview Of Natural Treatment Yeast Infection [print this page]

Many people are looking for natural methods of treatment yeast infection as a way of preventing a recurrence of this irritating condition.

Yeast infections are more common in women but children and men can also suffer from them. They generally occur in moist skin environments like between the toes, under the arms, in the groin and in women, yeast infections are most common in the vagina. The candida fungus is always present on the body; it is when they increase that the symptoms of yeast infection occur. It is not a serious condition but the symptoms are most uncomfortable.

There are a variety of reasons that cause the fungus to increase, including heat, sweat, antibiotics and hormone changes in women caused by pregnancy, menstrual period and birth control pills. The fungus can also be picked up in public places like gyms and swimming pools, so it is important to wear footwear in these places, even in the showers.

One of the first things to look at is your diet, particularly if you get recurrent yeast infections. Make sure you eat plenty of vegetables and fruit, more fish and chicken than red meat and limit your intake of products that contain yeast like bread, baked goods and beer. Continue these changes as part of a healthy lifestyle, not only when you have an infection. Include yogurt with live cultures in your diet every day; it contains probiotics that help to control the growth of candida. Garlic is another food that should be eaten regularly to prevent yeast infections. Drink plenty of plain water to keep the system flushed of toxins and avoid fast, fatty and starchy foods, artificial sweeteners and added sugar.

To treat the symptoms, you can apply plain yogurt which contains live Lactobacillus Acidophilus to the effected area for fast relief of the itching and irritation. Make sure the yogurt you use like this has no flavors or sweeteners as these will exacerbate the problem. Women can insert yogurt into the vagina using an applicator or by smearing some onto a tampon and inserting that.

Tea tree oil or cream can be used on areas affected by yeast infections and is very effective at controlling the symptoms. Garlic paste can be spread on all external affected areas, but should never be used in the vagina. To relieve really bad symptoms, sit in a warm bath that has either tea tree oil or salt dissolved in it; this is a great instant treatment for yeast infections.

Lifestyle changes that help to prevent repeated infections include wearing loose clothing, non-synthetic underwear and quickly changing out of wet clothes. Avoid wearing tight clothing that restricts air flow in problem areas, like jeans, pantyhose and leggings. Use only non-scented deodorants and body sprays, and use only plain tampons preferable made of cotton.
