Do Low Carb Diets Really Work?
Do Low Carb Diets Really Work?

Low carb diets have been the buzz in the weight loss world for quite some already. There are a wide variety of low to no carb diets being promoted. Hence, in many weight loss forums, it would appear that carbs are indeed one of the "bad guys". The prevailing notion among many dieting cognoscenti is that carbs can make you gain weight.

Let's stop for a minute and consider a theoretical scenario where you buy into this belief and proceed to curb your carb intake. What are the initial effects of low or no carb intake?

Initially would be weight loss, due mainly to the diuretic effect of low carb diets. Thus, the weight loss would be temporary. However, some weight loss may occur too since low carb diets have more fat and protein so the tendency would be for you to feel full much longer. Then because low carb diets are quite strict about what you can eat, then you will undoubtedly have lower calorie consumption.

So while some weight loss is due to water loss, there is some weight loss that is attributable directly to lower calorie consumption due to the low carb diet itself. Does this therefore mean that the low carb diets do in fact work?

Lower caloric consumption and weight loss are not the only criteria for saying whether a diet is good or not. In fact, what is more important would be the overall effect on your body and this is one area where the low carb diet can have significant negative effects.

If you have any friends who are into endurance sports like running or cycling, then you must have observed them gobbling pasta down like there is no tomorrow. What foods have carbs? This would include bread, pasta, sweets, fruits and grains among other foods, and they would be consuming these foods like they were going out of style. In fact they have a term for this called carbo loading. Stop for a minute and think why these obviously very fit and healthy athletes are doing this if carbs are in fact bad?

Their answer to you would be that the carbs are essential in producing the energy they need to perform. If they ran out of carbs, they would just stop. The term they have for this is bonking or hitting the wall. For those who have felt it, those words describe the sensation perfectly. You absolutely cannot pedal anymore once you have used up the fuel provided by carbs.

So what this tells you is that carbs are essential to your normal functioning. You may not need it in the same amount that athletes do, but you need it to survive and you will experience a wide range of negative effects if you deprive yourself of this important dietary component.
