LCD TVs - Are They Worth Buying?

LCD television refers to televisions that use the LCD technology of computer monitors to generate images. However in case of television sets, the LCD technology is fine tuned for video display. LCD tvs have many features that eclipse the CRT television and thus have become instantly popular among consumers.

The basic principle behind the working of LCD tvs display is the phenomenon known as "transmissive display". The term transmissive display applies here because, the light is not emitted by the liquid crystals themselves, but by a light source behind the panels. This light gets redirected by a white panel behind the LCD and is uniformly distributed to get a sharp, smooth image.

Typically, an LCD TV display has two polarizing transparent crystals and a liquid crystal solution squashed between the crystals. The front layer of glass of the display is etched on the rear to form a grid like template for the liquid crystal. These crystals can bend light in reaction to an electric current and thus act as a shutter that either allows or blocks light. Thus, the video signal creates a pattern of transparent and black crystals that generate the image.

Though LCD Tvs are popular, they also have their own set of disadvantages. The pixel response time of LCD tvs are slow and thus create ghosting effects when an object moves too fast in the movie. Though improvements have been made to fix this defect, LCD tvs work well with fast moving objects only under the size of 35 inch. Over 35, the clarity of the video gets reduced substantially with the increase in size. Also since LCD tvs use LCD panels, they do not go fully black, but look dark gray instead.

Compared to CRT, the LCD televisions are quite pricey. LCD tvs are too expensive especially if you prefer sizes over 35 inches and with an aspect ratio of 16:9. However the manufacturing prices fell with improvements and today, LCD tvs are the most widely selling television sets in the world.

The main reasons why LCD tvs are so popular is because the clarity, sharpness and high definition of the resulting video. Since it offers more brightness and contrast than the CRT tvs, the LCD tvs perform well under absolutely any kind of light ambiance. Even in a brightly lit room, the video can be watched without much strain and the display does not glare from the lights in the room. Also, since most LCD tvs have up to a maximum of 160 viewing angle, one can comfortably watch the video from anyplace but within 80 on either side of the LCD tv.

One major advantage LCD tvs have over plasma, besides cost, is that LCD tvs do not suffer image burn in. Since colors are generated using filters and phosphor dots are not surfaced over the display image burn in does not occur. This attribute is essential, especially for a multifunctional LCD tv, that can also be used for gaming, PC and for HDTV.

LCDs also offer a wide array of choices in screen size to choose from, starting at 13 inch and going up to a standard 65; there are brands that have LCD tvs that even go up to 100 inches. The LCD television is also very easy to maintain and thus very economical.
