Frequently Asked Question: What is the most common reason for Heel Pain?

The most common cause of heel pain is a condition called Plantar Fasciitis, or some call it Calcaneal Spur Syndrome. The condition is caused by either a very high arch or a very low collapsible arch. The Collapsible Arch or the High Arch causes a significant amount of strain and tension on the ligament that covers the bottom of the foot, and its called the Plantar Fascia, or the Plantar Ligament. This is a very thick and strong ligament that originates at the Medial Tubercle of the heel, or Calcaneous, as its called, and fans out into three separate bandsa medial, a central, and a lateral band.

Most of the problems usually occur at the insertion of the medial band on the heel. The constant strain and stretches causes the fibers of the Plantar Ligament or fascia to tear. And that continued trauma to the Plantar Fascia causes inflammation.

The acute phase of Plantar Fasciitis is sometimes debilitating, causing a person to not even be able to stand on their feet. Chronic Plantar Fasciitis is also sometimes very painful, but in most cases, it is tolerable over a course of many months, even years.

Its very common for us not to see patients with this condition till six months or so after your pain has started.
