There are so many commercials where smiling actors interview a regular Joe Dieter. Both the glitzy star and the regular guy claim weight loss victory and attribute success to one diet plan or another. Why doesn't the general clientele of these companies find similar results?
The blame can sometimes rest with the consumer himself or herself. When the diet isn't followed, it doesn't have a chance to fail or succeed. Diet cheaters, however, do not account for the total net failure of the diet and weight loss industry.
Ever taken a closer look at the television screen during one of these commercials? Sharing the same screen as fantastic before and after photos is a caption that is usually hidden somewhere near the bottom of the picture in miniscule writing and reads, "Results not typical".
Why is this company showing customers the exception to the rule? Remember the dieter's demand? "I want to lose weight fast!" This is what motivates millions to plunk down a credit card and suffer through weeks of tasteless prepackaged program foods.
Even the most mediocre cooks can churn out better tasting, more nutrient concentrated meals than what is offered by most diet companies. That is precisely the cause that affects the failure of so many diets.
The food offerings are neither healthy nor tasty. Prepackaged foods, no matter whose logo is on the label just aren't health foods. They contain so many chemicals, preservatives and artificial ingredients to stabilize them for shelf life that they can only be categorized as food in the most technical terms.
The body wants real food. It does not respond favorably to poor second-rate substitutes. The further a food item wanders from its originating form the less likely the body is to thrive when fueled by it.
Hidden Saboteurs of Healthy Eating
Aside from chemical content and heavy processing pre-packaged diet foods, all harbor a little known saboteur. Dieters are often unaware of the subtle effects flavorings can have on their diet efforts.
Many of the most commonly used flavorings in boxed and frozen foods do not react well with diet and metabolism. Many flavorings depress metabolism, increase appetite or reduce the body's feelings of fullness.
The result is that dieters feel full for shorter periods of time, desire larger portions at meal times and burn all those calories at a slower rate than normal metabolic function. Hmm, does any of that sound as if it would equate to fat loss success?
Dieters would be far better off to learn a few basic healthy eating habits and do their own cooking.
