Digging Deep the Fun Way For Weight Loss

A recent slew of research studies have found that alternative therapy to relieve our mental stresses actually work for weight loss.

The first study was on laughter yoga. In laughter yoga a group of friends, or once you get the hang of it any willing group, gets together and simply starts to simulate laughter. One important note, from the researchers is that the initial start to laughter is in fact forced, nobody needs to be telling jokes. Very quickly everyone will simply start to laugh, giggle, and generally be enjoying himself or herself. The researchers have found that this works better for women, but men can receive benefits too. The study results showed that individuals that participated in laughter yoga more often lost more weight over a six month time period than those that did not participate.

Second, mind-body exploration therapy is the process of discovering what it is that "gets us all worked up." Sometimes according to Dr. Gordon, people's thoughts and feeling are so strong they can actually make themselves physically ill. Through mind body therapy the study subjects were asked to deal with this stress in one of two ways. Either talking about the problem with a trusted friend, or write/draw the feelings out in a journal. Individuals were allowed to choose which way to deal with it based upon their own preferences. After four months those that participated in the mind body therapy had lost 5% more weight than those on a traditional diet program.

Breathing exercises are used by many in meditation centers around the world for relaxation, but few use it for weight loss until now. A research study used breathing exercises on a daily basis for one month found that people lost more weight compared to a traditional diet program. The subjects were simply asked to breath deeply for at least two minutes each day, if they wanted to practice it more often they could. The process lowers levels of stress and most likely stress hormones that are related to obesity and weight gain. Over time the individuals that practiced the deep breathing technique because much better at lowering their stress levels and experienced increased energy for exercise.

Online support groups are a very popular way to share comments and concerns about a problem in ones lives. Recent research from leading medical schools show that people that participate in online support groups on a weekly basis lose more weight than those that do not. Researchers feel that the reason behind it is that support groups are convenient, offer instant encouragement, and especially for individuals that live in remote areas they can connect with others that are experiencing the same issues.
