ROME, ITALY

The capital of Italy is Rome and it is also the country's largest and most populated city with over 2.6 million residents in 1,285.3 km2 (496.3 sq mi). The population of the urban area was estimated by Eurostat to be around 3.46 million in 2004. Also the metropolitan area was estimated by OECD,or the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, to have a population of 3.7 million in 2006. Rome is definitely a great travel destination for travelers to take a vacation or at least go to see. The city of Rome is located near the central-western section of the Italian Peninsula, on the Tiber River within the Lazio part of Italy. Rome's history spans over two and half thousand years, it was the capital city of the Roman Republic, the Roman Empire, and the Roman Kingdom, which was the leading Power in Western Europe and the lands surrounding the Mediterranean Sea for well over seven hundred years from the 1st Century B.C. Until the 7th Century A.D. Since the 2nd Century A.D. Rome has been the seat of the Papacy and, after the end of the Byzantine domination, in the 8th century it took over as the capital of the Papal States, which lasted until 1970. In 1871, Rome then became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, and in 1946 that of the Italian Republic. Since 1929, it is also the home of the Vatican City, which is an independent city-state presided over by the Pope.

Late after the middle Ages, Rome was powered by pope like Leo X and Alexander VI, who molded the city into one of the major centers of the Italian Renaissance, along with the Florence. The current-day version of St. Peter's Basilica was made and Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel. Lots of famous architects and artists, like Bernini, Raphael, and Bramante lived awhile in the city of Rome, contributing to its Baroque and Renaissance architecture

Ever since the 1957 Treaty of Rome establishing the European Economic Community, the metropolis has been like a center for international co-operative activities, with worldwide organizations like International Fund for Agricultural Development (I.F.A.D.), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Food Programme (W.F.P.), and the NATO Defense College being the headquartered in the city.
