What's a good diet to lose weight? Wouldn't it be great to find a one size fits all weight loss program with food that tastes great? How about one that lets you eat whatever you want? While there's no such thing as a one size fits all diet, the good news is that you can create a diet that works for you. In addition, it is not unreasonable to expect to have lots of options so you can choose foods you like. And best of all, it is possible to have a diet like this and still lose weight!

A big part of having a workable diet is variety along with foods that taste good. Let's look at one simple example, the potato. Often banned on weight loss diets because it is too carby or too starchy, it is in fact loaded with good nutrients like fiber, Vitamin C, even potassium (bet you thought you had to eat bananas for that). But doesn't it have a lot of calories? Actually a potato has about the same number of calories as a large apple, something every dieter would expect to eat a lot of.

The problem is not the potato; it is our tendency to load it up with butter, sour cream or bacon bits. Or sometimes we eat potatoes in the form of fries or greasy chips. So what's a healthy potato? How do we take advantage of what it has to offer including something which tastes good and adds variety to our diet? Fortunately there are many options. One is to cut potatoes into fry sized pieces. Then bake them in the oven after sprinkling them with your favorite herbs like thyme, sage or paprika. Alternatively sprinkle them lightly with seasoned salt or a little pepper or even a dash of cayenne if you like hot foods. Bake until crisp, turning frequently.

For many people, a diet is a predetermined list of foods that you force yourself to eat until you just can't stand it any more. Some of the diets out there are rather extreme such as grapefruit diets or diets based on drinking some kind of "health" drink three times a day. Some diets consist of pre-prepared foods that are guaranteed to make you slim if you just keep buying and eating them. Unfortunately the problem with extreme diets is that they aren't realistic, and in some cases they can be very expensive. Furthermore, most of these diets are focused on one thing, quick weight loss, rather than the most important thing which is healthy eating for weight loss that you can count on long term.

This means that the best diet is a change in eating habits; one which is not so much focused on weight loss as it is on how to achieve the best possible health. The best foods for weight loss are part of a larger perspective that incorporates lifestyle changes. This means making choices designed to reduce your stress and increase your level of activity as well as improving what you eat. Some of the changes can be small ones.

For example, a recent study compared two groups of over weight people. One group watched television for as long as they wanted. The other group limited their television viewing to less than three hours a day. The second group utilized 119 calories per day more than the first group which equated to losing half a pound a week.

So what is the best diet to lose weight? It's one that supports you to be your healthiest. When you achieve good health your weight falls into line.
