Parents Influence Kids' Activity Levels

The children of parents who are active tend to emulate their parents and become active as well- is a theory that physical educators believe in. But there are no scientific findings to substantiate this belief. But, one thing can of course be said that parents are the role model for most children and if the parents are physically active, then that could influence children in a big way. There is no doubt that parental advice, encouragement and support can help children lead active lives.

Parents who wish that their children should acquit themselves creditably in sports and other physical activity are more likely to influence their children to pursue those goals to bring laurels than parents who are disinterested in sports.

Parental encouragement-be it verbal or through example - is certainly a crucial factor for a child to remain active. Parents can take extra care to ensure the child spends time to play outdoor games instead of playing video games or watching television. Parental encouragement directly and indirectly influences a child's desire for vigorous physical activity.

Parental involvement has a greater impact on the child's eagerness to be active. For instance, if the parents also play outdoor games along with children, then the children will not only enjoy the game more but will also clamor for spending more time playing. Likewise parents can also do physical exercises along with children instead of merely exhorting them to attend physical training. Parents should involve children in running, cycling, swimming and skating not to speak of other outdoor games.

There is this complaint that most parents encourage sons to partake in vigorous physical activity and outdoor sports more than their daughters. There is this gender bias and girls are more often asked to stay indoors attending to domestic chores or minding the babies.

Parents who believe that sons should be more involved in physical activities than daughters generally encourage boys and ignore girls. The difference between physical activity levels of girls and boys obviously has much to with the parental attitude, although provided equal opportunities and parental support, girls may want to involve as much as boys in outdoor sports.

Again, most parents may encourage and support a naturally talented child to involve in sports than the one that is less-skilled. This attitude may lead to an inferiority complex in the neglected child and make him or her less physically active.

Science and technology have made today a better place to live in. In earlier times, children invariably walked to school and also played after school hours. Today, most children drive to school and attend extra coaching classes after school hours. Because of these latest trends, parents will have to take extra interest and encourage their children to become more physically active.

Physical training instructors are expressing concern that children are becoming inactive and resent the play grounds. It has to be admitted that society has eliminated physical activity out of a child's life. Parents who understand, encourage, facilitate, and support physical activity and who involve themselves with their children in outdoor games can help them become active and dynamic.
