In this case, you are particularly prone to spotting after sexual intercourse or pap smear.
If spotting is followed by abdominal pain and cramping, this may be a sign you are having a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. Its important to let your doctor know about any signs of blood or spotting, because a miscarriage could be life threatening, not only for you but also the baby.
Technically or biologically speaking, spotting is caused by the process of the thick bed of blood vessels in the endometrium as the blastocyst implants into the uterine wall. The blastocyst is the fertilized egg that has yet to implant into the uterine wall. Through this process, some blood natural is released from the uterine wall which is the cause of the spotting itself.
Ectopic pregnancy can also be a reason why some women experience pregnancy spotting. Implantation and thereafter, development of the baby outside the uterus can cause vaginal bleeding. Outside the uterus, the embryo mainly begins to develop in the fallopian tube, which is why this ectopic pregnancy is also termed as tubal pregnancy or molar pregnancy.

Another unfortunate reason why you may notice pregnancy spotting is if you are experiencing ectopic pregnancy. The fertilized egg (embryo) is supposed to embed or implant itself in the walls of the uterus; that is the ideal situation. If this does not happen, and anything else occurs, that is, if the embryo embeds itself inside of the fallopian tube, then you are said to have an ectopic pregnancy.
