subject: Buying A Guinea Pig - 3 Essential Things You Must Think About [print this page]

Deciding to purchase a guinea pig is a big decision, and it's very important that you take some time to ensure it is the right one, before you go through with it. The following 3 points are among the most important things that you must think about before becoming a guinea pig owner, and will help make sure that you and your animal are suited:

How Many Should You Buy?

When living in the wild, guinea pigs always live in packs, and they must live this way in captivity as well. If you keep one on its own, it will get very lonely, and so you must keep them with one or more others, to give them some company. Naturally, this will affect things such as the cost of ownership and the size of the cage you will need, so keep this in mind when deciding whether you'd like to own guinea pigs.

Where Should You Keep Them?

Although they have very thick fur, guinea pigs can still be affected by the weather. Rain, wind, and hot and cold temperatures can be very dangerous to your animals. As a result, it is often best to let them live indoors. But if you don't have enough space inside and need to keep them outdoors, you should provide them with a purpose-built outdoor hutch and lots of warm bedding.

How Much Time Can You Give Them?

Guinea pigs are among the least demanding types of pet to look after, due to the fact that they are happy to spend long periods of time in each others' company, entertaining themselves. However, you still have to get them out daily to provide some affection and to let them run about and work up a sweat. If you are unable to provide this, then you should consider choosing a less demanding animal.
