subject: Top Safety Tips For Women [print this page]

Women used to be perceived as the "weaker sex." But as time goes by, women have proved their excellence in different fields such as politics, academics, career, sports, science, and many more. But sadly, many people still think that women don't deserve respect. This is evident in the rate of crimes against women. About 90 percent of all assaults have targeted women. This is why, it is only right that women learn to protect themselves for whatever attack that they may encounter. Here are some practical safety tips that all women should heed.

Engage in a self-defense program

Learning self defense tactics is one good way to protect yourself. You have the option to enroll in a martial arts training class to learn a certain type of fighting style such as Taekwondo, Judo, Tai Chi, Kung Fu, Karate, and so on. Or you may wish to learn from the comforts of your own home by investing on self defense videos. Both options have their own pros and cons that you should know about so you can make an informed choice.

Use common sense

Using your common sense can help you in protecting yourself in more ways than you can imagine. Don't walk on dark areas, always hang out with another person especially when outdoors during the night, stay away from dangerous zones, and don't flaunt your money or jewelry when outside.

Don't appear an easy target

Exude with self confidence when you walk on the streets or talk to people. This way, people will have the impression that you're someone that cannot easily be messed with. If you're the type who always looks like a victim, you will be an easier target for crimes. It would also be great if you can keep a tiptop shape. This is important so that you appear strong and powerful.

Always be alert

Always be on the lookout when you're outside your home. Don't lose your head in daydreaming while you're driving, walking on the streets, or eating someplace. Don't let things keep you from observing your surroundings. Always be aware of everything that is happening around you. Keep a close look at the suspicious guy who's constantly throwing glances on you. Of course, there is a huge difference between being alert and being paranoid. You don't have to call the cops everytime you see someone looking at you.

Equip yourself with self defense devices

Pepper spray, taser, and stun gun are just few of the many devices that you can choose to have in your purse so you can protect yourself in case of an attack. Of course, it's not enough that you own a protective device. It won't protect you unless you know how to use it properly. If used properly, these devices can give you at least 3 to 10 minute chance to escape.

Trust your instincts

Finally, you have to learn to trust your instincts. Women's intuition is true 90 percent of the time so when you're mind is telling you to get out of that place, do so. If you're hearing that little voice inside of you say that this guy who's talking to you is no good, believe it and excuse yourself so you can leave.
